Recon Marine is awarded Navy Cross Recon Marine is awarded Navy Cross
Recon Marine awarded Navy Cross for thriving in heavy combat ARLINGTON, Va. — Gunnery Sgt. Brian M. Blonder shot and killed an insurgent who was aiming a rocket-propelled grenade at his Marines. After that, Blonder and his Marines averaged killing one insurgent about every 10 minutes. At the end of an all-day fight, more than 50 Taliban were dead, scores were retreating, and the Marines took control of a key supply route through the village of Shewan, Afghanistan. Blonder said it was what he came to do, and it’s what Marines do best – kill the enemy. And his unit did that exceptionally well that even though the Taliban outnumbered the Marines roughly eight to one. For thriving in the face of danger, Blonder, a native of Deer Beach, Fla., was awarded the Navy Cross during a ceremony at the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Va., May 10. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus presented the award and said Blonder is “one of the most selfless and disciplined Marines” he’s ever met. “He’ll be remembered for this for generations,” Mabus said. “His attack was relentless. The insurgents grew afraid.” Blonder deployed to Afghanistan in the summer of 2008 with 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment. As a reconnaissance Marine by trade, he was serving as platoon sergeant for Force Reconnaissance Platoon, a group of 30 Marines, who were attached to the battalion’s Company G. The firefight began when Marines and Afghan National Police were patrolling in Shewan, Afghanistan, a desert village in southern Afghanistan closer to the Iranian border, late morning Aug. 8, 2008. Blonder and Force Recon Platoon, along with an equal-sized element from Company G, were patrolling the village streets, anticipating enemy activity. Blonder and his Marines entered the village from its eastern border, while the Company G Marines entered from the North...
3rd Recon in Combat Hunter 3rd Recon in Combat Hunter
3rd Recon Marines learn techniques of predator CAMP SCHWAB, Okinawa, Japan — Marines with Company B, 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, recently began a combat hunter course hosted by instructors from the School of Infantry West. The 10-day course began Jan. 24 and is designed to improve the observation and hunting skills of the individual Marines operating in combat environments, as well as enhance their survivability. The concept of the combat hunter course originated in 2007, in order to transform Marines’ mindset to that of a predator rather than prey, said Sgt. Kyle O. Kerr, a combat instructor with Advanced Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry West, Camp Pendleton, Calif. “The course is broken down into three pillars- observation, tracking and profiling,” Kerr said. “The package was put together because Marines were being hunted down (by insurgents) while in country. We wanted (our Marines) to be one step (ahead of) the insurgents.” When instructors first began working with profiling, police officers from multiple departments were brought in to teach them the necessary skills needed to identify what a person did from several feet away, said Kerr. “You can profile someone from Kansas to Kandahar- we all have similar habits and mannerisms,” he continued...
MSgt David Jarvis, Silver Star recipient MSgt David Jarvis, Silver Star recipient
A year ago this month, Master Sgt. David Jarvis and part of his platoon of Camp Pendleton Marines found themselves surrounded by dozens of insurgents in Afghanistan's deadly Sangin River Valley. A roadside bomb detonated, severely injuring two troops. Machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades assaulted the Marines from several directions. The 34-year-old Jarvis repeatedly moved along his defensive lines, putting him directly in the line of fire as he repositioned his troops to fend off the attack. As the hourlong firefight dragged on, the native of Port Orchard, Wash., realized that a medical evacuation helicopter called in to pick up the injured troops was in danger. Jarvis attacked with a light anti-armor rocket, again putting himself in the direct line of fire. It was a move that allowed the rescue helicopter to land and safely evacuate the wounded. For those actions, Jarvis was awarded the Silver Star on Wednesday, an honor he said belongs to all the Marines that were there. "It's not my day, it's a day for everybody to remember and look back on all the things we did there," he said before his award ceremony. "I truly don't take it as my citation ---- it's all of ours." But moments after 1st Marine Division commander Maj. Gen. Ronald Bailey pinned on Jarvis' chest the third-highest honor a Marine can receive after the Medal of Honor and Navy Cross, Jarvis also was awarded a Bronze Star with a "V" for valor in combat, clearly marking him as someone special. That award came for a set of similar actions in July and August of last year in which he and his Marines were attacked by...

"A couple months ago I stopped at a stand you had set up in front of BRC. It was just before Father's day and I saw that you had a "Recon Dad" T-shirt. My Father joined the Marine Corps in 1956, and served with 1st. Recon sometime durring Vietnam. He is part of the I don't talk about it genneration so I never ask or pry. He is 72 now and more than a little out of it in the brain matter department. I thought that the t-shirt would be a great gift. He wears it with pride and although he can't remember what he had for breakfast most of the time, but he remembers the pride that being part of Recon instills."

"Thank you, again, for all of your help in getting all of us our green silkies! We did not know- until we got to (Camp) Leatherneck- that we would only be allowed to wear green shorts. I still can't believe Spec Ops Outfitters made green silkies from scratch for all of us!! The Marines of 3D Force Recon and 3D Recon Bn couldn't be more pleased!!! You have definitely gained some lifelong, loyal customers!! "

"Just wanted to say thank you for the fast shipping. I ordered on a Friday and received my items on a Monday...it was nice to find a place with some real ARS logos on it. Thanks for the great service!"
